Final Friday Date Night at City Market

jperin || July 31, 2017

Final Friday Date Night returns to City Market at the end of August with great music, couples' beer yoga, wine and Indiana craft beer from Tomlinson Tap Room, and more!

Nearly 72 years ago today the USS Indianapolis was sunk in the Pacific Ocean during the closing days of World War II. After the sinking, and days adrift at sea, nearly 900 men lost their lives, including many Hoosiers. One man who survived the ordeal was native Hoosier and Indianapolis resident, the late James "Jimmy" O'Donnell.

After returning home, Mr. O'Donnell served in the Indianapolis Fire Department until 1981, living through a number of fires that should have proved fatal.

Mr. O'Donnell died on January 8, 2013. A statue honoring him, and the USS Indianapolis, stands on the Indianapolis City Market's west plaza. Today, Friday, July 28, 2017, the City Market is hosting a memorial service to honor Mr. O'Donnell and his comrades who served and sacrificed on the USS Indianapolis.

This memorial service will mark the start of a campaign to raise the funds necessary to erect a plaque detailing the story of the USS Indianapolis, Mr. O'Donnell's role in the ordeal, and his significance to the Indianapolis community.
